"Summer Fling"

The exhibition "Summer Fling" epitomizes the happy-go-lucky sentiment of summer. In the gallery, summer is represented by traditional and modern paintings; in the sculpture garden, summer is represented b y colorful flowers and shrubs surrounding sculptures. The gallery is open to the public 1-7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 1-6 p.m. Saturday.

The following YMCA programs will be offered this fall: basketball, martial arts, indoor soccer, indoor T-ball, tennis, swimming lessons, art, dance, teen leaders, youth fitness, body sculpting, cardio step, hip hop cardio, kickboxing, volleyball, Swiss ball workouts, Zumba, SMILE-Seniors Move in Light Exercise, Qi Gong, Tai Chi Chuan, Pilates, yoga, aquacise and arthritis aquacise. Registration for all classes will be held Aug. 23- Sept. 10, during normal YMCA business hours, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Baby & Me Yoga

This five-week program is designed for mothers and their babies, approximately six weeks to 1 years old, is both challenging and relaxing. Topics covered include postpartum conditions such as back strain, weak abdominal wall and pelvic floor, tight shoulders, sleeplessness and stress. It helps women regain strength, as well as adapt and grow in their new role as mother. It is an opportunity to nourish that profound bond with baby. A sense of community in the class allows students to discuss any concerns or share information and ideas on parenting in a nurturing environment. A certified yoga instructor facilitates these classes. This hour program will be held at the Destination Maternity’s Learning Studio, located at 35 Plaza on Route 4 west, Paramus on Mondays, and the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus on Wednesdays. The fee is $85 for a five-week series.

Alex Masket: A View with a Room
Kresge Gallery in the Berrie Center at Ramapo College of New Jersey, Mahwah
A reception and talk by the artist’s mother, Elaine Masket, and filmmaker Dennis Connors will be held 5 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Sharp Auditorium. Connors’s award-winning documentary film, Breaking Boundaries: the Art of Alex Masket, will be shown and discussed, followed by a gallery reception. This solo exhibition emphasizes Masket’s uninhibited, bold use of color and his facility with unconventional media. Masket’s intricately composed and beautifully balanced work is dominated by color and form. The 23-year-old artist is severely autistic and entirely self-taught. An important component of the display at Ramapo is a recreation of the artist’s room. The exhibition incorporates a variety of media ranging from paint and vinyl stickers to colored duct tape. Gallery hours are 1-5 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 2-7 p.m. Wednesday. Special Sunday hours: 1-5 p.m. Oct. 3.

Breastfeeding Program

This informative course explores the advantages and benefits of breastfeeding. There will also be discussions regarding techniques that work, positions that are comfortable, common problems, pumping and storage of breast milk and the correct use of the breast pumping equipment. In addition, Medela breastfeeding products will be available for rental or purchase. This class should be taken during the eighth month of pregnancy. The course will be held on September 1, 2 and 16. The fee is $50.

Newborn Care Program

This course details all the basics of newborn care for expectant parents and excited grandparents. Bathing, bath products, diapering, cord care, temperature-taking, dressing, sleep patterns, and pediatrician intervention are some of the topics covered. Childcare providers are welcome to register. This three-hour, one-session class will be held on Sept. 2, 16 and 23. The fee is $50 per couple. Classes should be taken before the birth of the child.

The duo have been likened to a "similar pairing 40 years ago of Gram Parsons and a very young Emmylou Harris." The duo will perform 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 at Spring Lake at the Wyckoff Family YMCA, 691 Wyckoff Ave., Wyckoff. Bring blankets and chairs for seating. Film Screening

Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood invites all who wish to join the synagogue’s community in preparing spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by attending a Selichot film showing and service. The program will begin with a showing of a classic episode of the original Star Trek TV series followed by study of key rabbinic texts on good and evil related to the theme of the episode and the high holidays. Rabbi David J. Fine and Cantor Caitlin Bromberg will lead services with the liturgy and music of the Selichot service as we begin to transform ourselves for the New Year and enter into the season of the High Holy Days. Temple Israel’s Rosh Hashanah Services will be held on Sept. 9 and Sept.10, and Yom Kippur services on Sept. 17 (Kol Nidre) and Sept. 18. In a rare opportunity for non-member families, a limited number of High Holy Day tickets are for sale. Those who have never been previously affiliated with Temple Israel may purchase tickets for this year’s services. If the purchaser activates Temple Israel membership by Dec. 31, 2010, the ticket purchase price will be deducted from the membership fees.

Cheer from Chawton: A Jane Austen Family Theatrical

The Glen Rock Public Library will present Cheer from Chawton: A Jane Austen Family Theatrical performed by Glen Rock resident, actress Karen Eterovich. Eterovich also wrote the play which is based on the life of the legendary novelist Jane Austen, and highlights Austen’s contributions to the world of literature, her relationship with her family and her adventures as a "flirtatious butterfly" in rural England. This performance is free and sponsored by the Glen Rock Public Library.

Dads on Duty

An experienced dad of four will guide you and give lots of "on the job training" tips. This class will identify and explain the value of developing and maintaining a strong father/child bond during the formative years of a child’s life. Learn how and why dads must play an active role in raising their children. Join other dads to discuss how they really feel, their fears and anxieties, and get answers to questions on how to overcome them. Some general baby care and “hands-on” practice using dolls will be part of this fun class. The fee for this course is $40.

YMCA TIDE Swim Team Tryouts
YMCA, 360 Main St., Hackensack
The YMCA of Greater Bergen County will be holding TIDE Swim Team Tryouts for the fall 2010-2011 season. Swimmers ages 6 years and older are encouraged to try out if they meet the following requirements: swim at a Y Fish Level or higher, are able to swim multiple laps of the pool, know all four competitive strokes, with consideration given for age (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.) Try outs will be held on the following days: 6:30 p.m. Sept. 8 for children 12 years and younger; 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 for children 13 years and older; make-up times for all are at noon Sept. 11 and 6:30 p.m. Sept.13. The try out fee is $10 and all swimmers must be on the YMCA pool deck and ready to swim at the tryout time listed above. Swimmers should bring swimsuit, goggles and towel.

Grandparents' Class

This three-hour class will provide information on the latest ideas in childbirth practices and child development. It will encourage a better understanding between parents and grandparents concerning decisions and suggestions that are involved in childcare. Topics to be covered will include newborn care, infant feeding, ways to soothe a crying baby, infant safety, childproofing a home, toys for various ages, and other concerns for new grandparents. Registration is necessary. Classes should be taken toward the end of the pregnancy. The fee is $45.

Porch Light Productions in Glen Rock announces the opening of its 2010/11 season with the rock musical Little Shop of Horrors. Performances are held 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Based on the 1960s Roger Corman film, the award-winning musical is the story of a down-and out skid row floral assistant who becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. Tickets are on sale now and seating is limited. This show may not be suitable for small children.Tickets are $25 for general admission and $22 for students and seniors.
