For the Lady of the House The living room, often unused in most homes, is here established as a special place for the lady of the house to spend time with her friends. One of several angled rooms in the home, the difficult space is maximized by the furniture layout, while a custom-designed area rug anchors the room. An angled fireplace invites the visitor (or homeowner) in. To soften and enhance, Spiegel used soft pastel washes and gold-leaf details on the moldings. Overhead lighting was passed over for the softness of ambient lamps. Layering lush, satiny fabrics for window treatments created a simple yet elegant framing, as well as a soft backdrop for the traditional fabrics of the seating. A Venetian glass mirror and unusual accessories add to the sophistication and quality of the space.

This design earned the Gold Award for Residential Spaces over 5,000 Square Feet from the New Jersey chapter of ASID’s (American Society of Interior Designers) Design of Excellence Awards Competition.
This 12,000-square-foot custom home was built on a strangely shaped property. To accommodate, the interior architecture had several similarly quirky spaces, and peculiarly angled rooms. Although difficult to design, the house appealed to the prospective homeowners, who bought it for its open flow and a layout that had great potential for large-group entertaining. The design challenge for Rona Spiegel was to create interiors that would reflect the promise of the architecture, while creating a welcoming, hospitable home for the clients’ lifestyle – including their three growing children, dog, extended family and friends.
Although the space planning was difficult due to an unusual layout, the results, based on proportion, scale and balance, define the spaces, and are a tailor-made reflection of the clients’ personalities and lifestyle. An uncluttered, classic style weaves a common thread throughout the home – without overloading the senses.
